The audio quality is impeccable, suitable for everything from intricate classical music to the dynamic soundtracks of action movies."

The previous generation Sony XM4 was already an outstanding headphone, but the XM5 introduces key enhancements in noise cancellation and comfort. It features a second processor and double the microphones dedicated to filtering out ambient noise. The earcups have been redesigned for a snugger fit on the ears, creating a better seal and thus improving passive noise isolation. The noise-canceling performance of the XM5 is markedly superior to the XM4 and outperforms almost any other noise-canceling headset in its price range.

The Sony WH-1000XM5 boasts a sleeker redesign with an updated headband adjustment mechanism. The band is now wider for better weight distribution, and the earcup padding is made of a luxurious synthetic leather that's softer and more comfortable. These improvements allow for hours of comfortable wear. However, one minor drawback is that the XM5 can no longer be folded inward, only swiveled, making it less compact.
