After years of anticipation, Hollow Knight: Silksong has finally received an official release date. Learn more about the game's development history and key details shared during Team Cherry's special announcement event.
Silksong Arrives on September 4, 2025
Team Cherry Makes Special Announcement
The journey to this announcement began during Gamescom Opening Night Live 2025, where Team Cherry confirmed their highly-anticipated sequel to the acclaimed Metroidvania title would launch within 2025. The developers promised additional details would follow in a dedicated presentation on their YouTube channel.
Team Cherry's Hollow Knight: Silksong Special Announcement, later rebranded as the Release Trailer, premiered on August 8, 2025. The presentation culminated with the confirmation everyone had been waiting for - a definitive September 4 release date.
Viewers were treated to an extensive gameplay trailer showcasing new bosses and environments. The footage highlighted the game's signature atmospheric world design, dramatic vertical spaces, and vast explorable areas. Most importantly, it demonstrated the series' trademark combat system - seemingly straightforward yet delivering fast-paced, mechanically deep encounters. The trailer also revealed over 40 major bosses and more than 200 additional enemies.
Silksong's Long Development Journey

Before these recent developments, information about Silksong had been scarce for over six years. The gaming community's anticipation became a running joke, with fans consistently flooding gaming presentations with questions about the game's status. It became rare to find a gaming discussion without some mention of Silksong.
The most concrete signs of progress emerged through recent updates to Silksong's Steam database and its inclusion in a Nintendo showcase. Observers noted the addition of achievements, age ratings, and new game files. The achievement implementation proved particularly significant, as these elements typically require completed gameplay mechanics and multilingual localization. Perhaps most telling was the activation of purchase functionality, suggesting pre-orders might soon become available.
Substantial "depot changes" also caught the community's attention. In Steam's infrastructure, depots represent organized file groupings delivered during game downloads. The core file distribution depots hadn't seen significant updates since the game's initial announcement in 2019, making these recent modifications particularly noteworthy.

This backend activity after years of minimal updates generated considerable excitement. The timing, coinciding with major June 2025 gaming events including PlayStation's State of Play, Summer Game Fest, and the Xbox Games Showcase, led many to hope for a surprise release during these presentations.
Beyond digital indicators, physical confirmation came through the announcement of playable Hollow Knight: Silksong demos at the Australian Centre for the Moving Image in Melbourne. Scheduled from September 18, 2025 to February 8, 2026, this exhibition will provide hands-on gameplay experiences for attendees.
