Shawn Levy's Star Wars Film Nearing Release, Says Writer
Are you eagerly awaiting Shawn Levy's upcoming Star Wars film? Fear not, fans of the galaxy far, far away—the director of *Deadpool & Wolverine* is still hard at work on this exciting new project. We have a fresh update from the film’s writer, Jonathan Tropper, to keep our anticipation alive.
"I am [excited] too," Tropper shared with Screen Rant about the future film. "I hope it's on the way sooner than you think."
The details of this upcoming movie remain largely under wraps, but we do know it will be set after *The Rise of Skywalker*. Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy has provided some insight into its timeline. "That’s also in the future," she told Deadline in February. "It’s all post-[the first] nine. Shawn’s is a standalone Star Wars story that'll take place post-nine, maybe five or six years out." This positions Levy’s film as the first to delve into the post-*Rise of Skywalker* era.
In the same interview, Kennedy confirmed that the film will follow *The Mandalorian and Grogu*, slated for 2026. "I'm producing the Mandalorian movie right now, and I'm also producing Shawn Levy's movie, which is after that," she explained. Additionally, it's been reported that Ryan Gosling is set to star in the project.
Tropper's comments suggest that progress is being made on Levy’s film, which won't hit theaters until at least the last quarter of 2026, if not 2027. Patience, young Padawan.
Disney hasn't released a Star Wars film since the divisive *Star Wars: Episode 9 - The Rise of Skywalker* in 2019. In the interim, several projects were canceled, including one from Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige and a trilogy from *Game of Thrones* showrunners D.B. Weiss and David Benioff. Additionally, a Star Wars movie initially planned for late 2026 was removed from Disney's calendar in November.

At the 2023 Star Wars Celebration, Lucasfilm unveiled three new Star Wars feature films: a Dave Filoni-directed New Republic film set in his Mando-verse, a *Dawn of the Jedi* movie led by James Mangold, and a *New Jedi Order* feature directed by Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy, which will see Daisy Ridley reprising her role as Rey post-*The Rise of Skywalker*.
The Obaid-Chinoy project has undergone several script changes, with Steven Knight recently departing after succeeding Damon Lindelof and Justin Britt-Gibson. Nevertheless, Rey remains a focal point for Disney's future Star Wars endeavors, as per a recent THR report suggesting she will appear in multiple upcoming films.
Disney's Star Wars plans extend even further. Late last year, it was announced that X-Men producer Simon Kinberg will write a new trilogy that, contrary to initial rumors, won't continue the Skywalker Saga.
The next Star Wars content to grace our screens will be Season 2 of *Andor*, premiering on Disney+ on April 22 with a triple-episode launch. May the Force be with you as we await these thrilling additions to the Star Wars saga.
