Sarah Michelle Gellar to Return in Buffy the Vampire Slayer Reboot
It looks like Buffy might be slaying again at Hulu.
Variety reports that a Buffy the Vampire Slayer reboot is close to being greenlit at Hulu, with star Sarah Michelle Gellar in discussions to reprise her iconic role as the vampire-slaying heroine. While the new series will focus on a new Slayer, Gellar is expected to appear as a recurring character, adding a touch of nostalgia and continuity to the reboot.
Adding to the excitement, Academy Award winner Chloé Zhao, renowned for her work on Nomadland and Eternals, is in talks to direct and executive produce the series. The writing and showrunning duties will be handled by the talented duo Nora Zuckerman and Lila Zuckerman. Notably, original series creator Joss Whedon is not involved in this reboot, following allegations of fostering a toxic work environment during the production of the original series and its spinoff, Angel.
While plot details remain under wraps, the core of the reboot will center around a new Slayer, with the possibility of Gellar's Buffy making appearances. The original Buffy the Vampire Slayer series followed Buffy Summers, a high school student chosen by fate to battle demons, vampires, and other supernatural forces. She was supported by her friends Willow Rosenberg and Xander Harris, as well as her Watcher, Rupert Giles.
Buffy the Vampire Slayer aired from 1997 to 2003, spanning seven seasons. It also spawned a spinoff, Angel, and was later continued through a series of canon comic books. With Hulu's reboot on the horizon, fans are eager to see how this new chapter in the Buffy universe unfolds.
