PS5 Disc Drive Back in Stock (But Maybe Not for Long)

The PlayStation 5 disc drive is currently available at select US retailers, including Amazon and PlayStation Direct, as of mid-January 2025. However, given recent trends, this stock is expected to sell out quickly.

The scarcity stems from the release of the PS5 Digital Edition in 2020 and, more recently, the PS5 Pro in November 2024. Neither the PS5 Pro nor the Slim models include a built-in disc drive, forcing consumers who want physical media compatibility to purchase the drive separately. This has led to persistent shortages in the US market, and even in the UK since late 2024.

While Amazon US and PlayStation Direct are currently selling the drive for its MSRP of $79.99, limited availability is reported elsewhere. One third-party Walmart seller offers the drive, but at a 50% markup ($122) and with only a few units remaining. Walmart, GameStop, and Best Buy remain out of stock.
