New Star Wars Novel Post-"Rise of Skywalker" Revealed
The Star Wars galaxy expands beyond The Rise of Skywalker sooner than expected — though not through Shawn Levy's project just yet. While anticipation builds for the Deadpool & Wolverine director's upcoming Star Wars: Starfighter, fans will first explore the post-Rise of Skywalker era through a new YA novel titled Star Wars: The Last Order.
Revealed on Penguin Random House's website, the novel delves deeper into John Boyega's Finn and Naomi Ackie's Jannah — resistance allies introduced in The Rise of Skywalker. Authored by Kwame Mbalia, the publisher's synopsis states:
"After the events of The Rise of Skywalker, the Resistance intercepts a First Order vessel carrying kidnapped children. As Finn and Jannah pursue the responsible officer to prevent further atrocities, both former stormtroopers confront their complex histories as soldiers of the oppressive regime."
The First Post-TROS Story Arrives
This novel becomes the first narrative exploring the galaxy after The Rise of Skywalker, despite not being the earliest planned project in this timeline. Shawn Levy's film remains in development, positioned further ahead in the timeline.
Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy previously discussed Levy's project in a February Deadline interview, outlining its placement: "It exists beyond the Skywalker saga — several years after Episode IX." Screenwriter Jonathan Tropper recently reaffirmed his excitement, telling Screen Rant, "Expect it sooner than anticipated." Shortly afterward, Star Wars Celebration Japan confirmed Ryan Gosling's casting and announced a May 28, 2027 release date.
