PlayStation Unveils New AAA Studio

Sony's newly established Los Angeles studio fuels PlayStation's expanding first-party lineup. A recent job posting confirms the addition of a 20th internal studio, dedicated to developing a high-profile, original AAA title for the PS5. This secretive venture adds to the already impressive roster of PlayStation studios, including renowned names like Naughty Dog and Insomniac Games.

The mystery surrounding this unnamed studio is generating significant buzz. Speculation points towards two potential origins: a spin-off team from Bungie, following the July 2024 layoffs that saw 155 Bungie employees transition to Sony Interactive Entertainment; or a team led by Jason Blundell, a veteran Call of Duty developer.

Blundell's involvement is particularly intriguing. He co-founded Deviation Games, a studio shuttered in March 2024 after facing undisclosed challenges. However, many former Deviation Games employees subsequently joined PlayStation, suggesting Blundell's team might be the core of Sony's new Los Angeles studio. This team's longer gestation period compared to the potential Bungie offshoot makes it a strong contender.

While the nature of the game remains undisclosed, the possibility of a continuation or reimagining of Deviation Games' abandoned AAA project is a popular fan theory. Regardless of the project's specifics, the confirmation of another PlayStation first-party title in development is exciting news for gamers. The studio's "ground-breaking" original IP promises to be a significant addition to the PlayStation 5's future game library, although a formal announcement may still be years away.
