Sega’s iconic arcade racing game, OutRun, is set to hit the big screen in a surprising movie adaptation, with Michael Bay and Sydney Sweeney attached to the project. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Universal Pictures has enlisted the acclaimed director of the Transformers franchise, Michael Bay, to direct and produce the OutRun film. Sydney Sweeney, known for her acting prowess, will also be taking on a producer role. The screenplay is being penned by Jayson Rothwell, though details about the plot remain under wraps, and no release date has been announced yet.

On the Sega front, Toru Nakahara, who contributed to the successful Sonic movies, will serve as a producer. Additionally, Shuji Utsumi, the CEO of Sega America and Europe, will oversee the film's development. OutRun originally debuted in 1986 as a visually stunning arcade driving game, crafted by the legendary Sega developer Yu Suzuki. Over the years, it has seen various versions and ports, with a notable sequel released in 2003. Although OutRun has been relatively quiet in recent years, the last release was OutRun Online Arcade by Sumo Digital in 2009.

Sega has been actively tapping into its rich catalog for inspiration, with new titles like Crazy Taxi, Jet Set Radio, Golden Axe, Virtua Fighter, and Shinobi currently in development. The company has also been pushing forward with adaptations of its beloved intellectual properties. The Sonic movies have been a massive hit, and last year saw the release of Like a Dragon: Yakuza on Amazon. The demand for video game adaptations in Hollywood is evident, with successes like The Super Mario Bros. Movie and the recent A Minecraft Movie setting new benchmarks.

As for the potential direction of the OutRun movie, it's speculated that Michael Bay and Sydney Sweeney might be envisioning a thrilling, action-packed driving film akin to the Fast & Furious series.
