Okami 2 Fulfills Director Hideki Kamiya's 18 Year Dream for a Sequel
Hideki Kamiya, renowned game director behind classics like Okami, Devil May Cry, and Bayonetta, embarks on a new chapter. After a two-decade tenure at PlatinumGames, he's launched Clovers Inc., a new studio dedicated to fulfilling his long-held ambition: an Okami sequel.
A Sequel Eighteen Years in the Making
Kamiya's passion for creating Okami and Viewtiful Joe sequels is well-documented. He felt their narratives were unfinished, a responsibility he felt compelled to address. His attempts to convince Capcom to greenlight a sequel proved unsuccessful, leading to his decision to forge his own path. Now, with Clovers Inc. and Capcom as publisher, his dream is finally becoming a reality.
Clovers Inc.: A New Beginning
Clovers Inc., a joint venture with former PlatinumGames colleague Kento Koyama, pays homage to Clover Studio, the developer of the original Okami. Kamiya emphasizes the importance of shared creative vision over sheer size, assembling a team of passionate developers, many of whom are former PlatinumGames employees. Koyama manages the business aspects, allowing Kamiya to focus on game development.
The studio, currently employing 25 people across Tokyo and Osaka, plans to expand gradually. The emphasis remains on fostering a collaborative environment where shared passion fuels creativity.
Departure from PlatinumGames
Kamiya's departure from PlatinumGames, a company he co-founded, surprised many. He cites internal changes that conflicted with his creative philosophy as the reason for his exit. Despite this, he expresses immense enthusiasm for the Okami sequel, highlighting the excitement of building Clovers Inc. from the ground up.
A Softer Side?
Kamiya's outspoken and sometimes abrasive online persona is well-known. However, recent events suggest a shift. He publicly apologized to a fan he previously insulted, demonstrating a newfound sensitivity. He's also been engaging more positively with fans, responding to requests and acknowledging their support. While his characteristic directness remains, a more conciliatory tone is emerging.
