Obsidian's Outer Worlds 2: Development Update
Obsidian Entertainment CEO Feargus Urquhart recently provided a positive update on the development of The Outer Worlds 2 and their upcoming fantasy RPG, Avowed.
Obsidian Entertainment Confident in Upcoming Titles
According to Urquhart, development on The Outer Worlds 2 is progressing smoothly. He praised the team, highlighting their experience and dedication: "I’m impressed with the team. We have a lot of people on that game that get it—who have worked on the first one and have been with us for a long time. So I’ve actually been really impressed by it."
Urquhart acknowledged the significant challenges faced by the studio, particularly during the COVID-19 pandemic and the period following their acquisition by Microsoft. Juggling multiple projects, including Grounded and Pentiment, stretched their resources. He candidly admitted, "We were kind of a crappy developer for about a year, year and a half." At one point, the studio even considered halting The Outer Worlds 2 development to focus on Avowed. However, they ultimately decided to persevere with all their projects.
He recalled the hectic period: "We got acquired [in 2018], and we were figuring out how to be acquired, and then Covid happens, and we're trying to get Outer Worlds done, and we're trying to get the DLC done, and we're trying to move Avowed forward, and we want to start again on Outer Worlds 2, get Outer Worlds 2 moving, and Grounded moving, and Josh is working on Pentiment."
Despite the hurdles, Urquhart expressed pride in the outcomes: Grounded and Pentiment "turned out awesome," Avowed is "looking great," and The Outer Worlds 2 is "looking incredible." While specific details about the game's content remain undisclosed, the delay of Avowed to 2025 suggests potential timeline adjustments for other projects.
Announced in 2021, The Outer Worlds 2 has seen limited updates. Urquhart acknowledged this and the possibility of a launch delay, similar to Avowed. However, he reaffirmed the studio's commitment to delivering high-quality games: "We will get there with all these games. Are they going to be on the timelines that we originally thought? No. But we’re going to get there, and I think that’s been proven now." Both The Outer Worlds 2 and Avowed are slated for release on PC and Xbox Series S/X.
