Nintendo Tweaks Classic Character Post-Donkey Kong Redesign
Nintendo has recently unveiled a refreshed appearance for Diddy Kong, following the earlier redesign of his iconic counterpart, Donkey Kong. This year, fans observed significant updates to Donkey Kong's design in official artwork and previews of Mario Kart World.
Now, Diddy Kong has also undergone a transformation, as showcased through new artwork on Nintendo's website and at the Licensing Expo 2025 in Las Vegas. According to Nintendo Life, the revamped Diddy Kong sports a more whimsical and approachable look, characterized by rounder eyes and a more playful smile.
Attendees at the Licensing Expo 2025, an event where brands display their franchises to secure merchandising and partnership opportunities, have had the chance to see the new designs of both Diddy and Donkey Kong. Photos shared by attendee Cptn_Alex on social media highlight these changes.

While Nintendo has not officially commented on the redesigns, many speculate that these alterations align with the characters' appearances in the successful The Super Mario Bros. Movie. Even Princess Peach received a minor redesign, with her appearance on the box art for Princess Peach: Showtime! resembling her movie counterpart, as noted by IGN's sister site Eurogamer.
Of course this post is popping off lmao. Here’s a better look at the new render :)

Looking ahead, Donkey Kong is set to star in the upcoming Nintendo Switch 2 title, Donkey Kong Bananza. Although Diddy Kong's involvement has not been confirmed, the inclusion of other Kong family members like Cranky Kong, coupled with the recent update to Diddy's design, suggests his likely participation. Moreover, the anticipated sequel to The Super Mario Bros. Movie, tentatively titled Super Mario World, is expected to feature more of Nintendo's beloved primates, including their new looks.
