Nintendo Switch 2 Size Revealed
The highly anticipated Nintendo Switch 2 was unveiled in a captivating announcement trailer, immediately showcasing that the new console is significantly larger than its predecessor. The trailer features a mesmerizing transformation where the original Switch's Joy-Con controllers detach, and the tablet section expands into the enhanced form of the Switch 2. This noticeable size increase indicates Nintendo's shift towards embracing larger portable devices, akin to the Steam Deck and iPad, moving away from the compact handhelds of its past.
While Nintendo has not released official size dimensions for the Switch 2, we can derive a rough estimate from the trailer and a recent leak. During CES 2025, we had the opportunity to experience a Switch 2 mock-up created by peripheral designer Genki. Although we couldn't verify its accuracy at the time, the trailer's console design closely matches the mock-up, suggesting our measurements are likely close to the final product.
Nintendo Switch 2 Screen Size
Based on our estimations, the **Switch 2 boasts an 8-inch screen**. This measurement represents the diagonal length of the display section (excluding the bezels), adhering to the universal standard for screen sizes. This size corroborates a rumor from early 2024. Consequently, we anticipate the display to be approximately **177mm wide and 99mm tall**.
If our estimates hold true, the Switch 2's screen would be nearly 30% larger diagonally than the original Switch's 6.2-inch LCD display, and **66% larger in overall area**. Such a substantial increase could enhance the gaming experience, provided the display technology is up to par.
Compared to other handhelds, the Switch 2's display will be 45% larger diagonally and 111% larger in surface area than the Switch Lite's 5.5-inch LCD touchscreen. Against the Switch OLED's 7-inch display, the Switch 2 will be 14% larger diagonally and 30% larger in total area.
In the current landscape of portable gaming, the Switch 2 will also compete with devices like the Steam Deck. The original Steam Deck and the Steam Deck OLED have 7-inch and 7.4-inch displays, respectively, with a 16:10 aspect ratio compared to the Switch's 16:9. Despite this, the Switch 2's 8-inch screen will still be larger, with an 8% increase in diagonal size and an 11% increase in overall area compared to Valve's OLED display.
Nintendo Switch 2 Overall Console Size
With a significantly larger screen, the Switch 2's overall size has also increased. The original Switch already required sizable pockets, and the Switch 2 will likely need even more space, fitting comfortably only in cargo pants pockets or a bag.
Measurements taken from the Genki mock-up at CES indicate the Switch 2 to be just over **10.5 inches long and 4.5 inches tall**, including the Joy-Cons. After scaling images from the trailer to match our photos and adjusting them to actual size, we estimate the Switch 2 to be approximately **265mm long and 115mm tall**.
In comparison, the original Switch measures 239mm long and 102mm tall, making the Switch 2 **approximately 25% larger**. It would also be around 61% larger than the Switch Lite (208mm x 91mm) and roughly 12% smaller than the Steam Deck (298mm x 117mm).
While we couldn't measure the depth precisely, the Switch 2 appears to maintain a similar half-inch thickness to its predecessor. Thus, the overall footprint is significantly larger, but the depth remains comparable.
Nintendo Switch 2 Joy-Con Size
The Switch 2 reveal trailer's transformation animation indicates that the Joy-Con controllers will retain a similar width but have grown taller. Using our scaling method, we estimate the new **Switch 2 Joy-Cons to be around 32mm wide and 115mm tall**, maintaining the same width as the original controllers (excluding the slot system) but increasing in height by 13mm to match the new console. This would make the new Joy-Con **approximately 13% larger** than their predecessors.
Nintendo Switch 2 Screen Unit Size
By subtracting the estimated Joy-Con size from the overall console dimensions, we calculate the **Switch 2 screen unit to be about 200mm long and 115mm tall**. This represents a size increase of around **31% over the original Switch's screen unit**.
The larger screen unit accommodates the 8-inch 16:9 display with an estimated bezel of 11mm along the sides and 8mm along the top and bottom. These dimensions suggest slimmer side bezels compared to the original Switch, with similar top and bottom bezels.
Keep in mind, these measurements are our best estimates based on available data and may differ from Nintendo's official figures. However, given our experience with the Genki mock-up, we're confident our estimates are reasonably accurate. We look forward to confirming these dimensions when we get our hands on the final product later this year.
