Nintendo 64 Classic Set for Modern Console Release
Updated ESRB Ratings Hint at Imminent Doom 64 Release for PS5 and Xbox Series X
Recent updates to the ESRB ratings suggest a potential upcoming release of Doom 64 on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S consoles. While neither Bethesda nor id Software have made an official announcement, the updated ESRB listing strongly indicates the game is nearing launch. This isn't unprecedented; the ESRB has accurately leaked game releases before official announcements.
The 1997 Nintendo 64 classic, Doom 64, received a remastered release for PS4 and Xbox One in 2020, featuring enhanced visuals and a new chapter. This new ESRB rating suggests a similar enhanced port is in the works for current-gen consoles. The timing of ESRB ratings historically suggests a relatively short wait until release.
While the updated rating doesn't mention a PC release, the 2020 version included a Steam release, and PC players can already experience a Doom 64-like experience through modding existing Doom titles. Bethesda's history of surprise releases also increases the likelihood of a stealth launch for Doom 64.
Looking beyond Doom 64, rumors point towards a potential January 2025 reveal for Doom: The Dark Ages, with a likely release sometime that year. Re-releasing classic titles like Doom 64 could serve as excellent pre-release marketing for the next main installment in the franchise.
