Additionally, NieR: Automata boasts numerous endings, ranging from detailed to brief, some of which require specific actions from certain characters. All Playable Characters In NieR: Automata

NieR: Automata's storyline centers around three key characters: 2B, 9S, and A2. 2B and 9S, as partners, will likely occupy most of your gameplay time, depending on your pace through each playthrough. Each character brings a unique combat style to the table, offering fresh gameplay experiences even with the same plug-in chips across all three playthroughs. While 2B, 9S, and A2 are all playable throughout the game, switching between them isn't always straightforward.

How To Switch Characters In NieR: Automata

In your initial playthrough, character switching isn't an option. The sequence of playable characters per playthrough is as follows:

• Playthrough 1 - 2B
• Playthrough 2 - 9S
• Playthrough 3 - 2B/9S/A2, with the game automatically switching between them based on the story's progression.

Upon reaching one of the main endings, you'll unlock Chapter Select mode, which allows you to choose your character. This mode lets you jump to any of the game's 17 chapters. You'll notice numbers on the right side of the screen indicating completed or incomplete side quests. If a character has numbers during a chapter, you can replay that chapter as that character.

In later chapters, particularly in playthrough 3, you're restricted to specific characters for certain sections. However, using Chapter Select, you can switch characters at any time by selecting a chapter where that character was originally playable. Remember to save before switching chapters, as progress made in Chapter Select mode will carry over, allowing you to level up all three characters' shared levels as you strive for the maximum level.
