NBC Exec Calls Suits LA Cancellation Tough But Necessary

Author : Aaliyah Update : Dec 27,2025

Suits has remained a fan-favorite series for nearly 15 years since its 2011 debut on USA Network. While its full availability on Netflix sparked a recent streaming revival, even this renewed popularity couldn't salvage the spinoff Suits LA, which NBC recently axed from its fall schedule. What led to this decision? Network executives, including programming strategy president Jeff Bader, provided transparency about their cancellation rationale.

"Programming decisions are never easy," Bader told Variety after the schedule release. "Despite high expectations, Suits LA simply didn't connect with audiences as we'd anticipated during its brief run."

"Viewership patterns and growth potential ultimately guided our choice," he continued. "While speculation about the reasons continues, the data clearly showed limited prospects for future audience expansion."

Bader elaborated on NBCUniversal's evaluation process: "We analyze comprehensive metrics - linear TV performance, digital engagement, growth trajectories, and decline patterns. These difficult choices balance immediate performance against future potential."

The executive confirmed NBCUniversal routinely considers transitioning canceled shows to Peacock, but Suits LA didn't meet the platform's criteria for continuation.

Regarding surviving shows, Bader detailed NBC's renewal criteria: "Week-to-week performance across platforms informs our decisions. We prioritize series demonstrating ratings consistency and audience growth potential while considering creative teams' input about attracting new viewers."

The original Suits enjoyed a successful nine-season run from 2011-2019. The revival, featuring Stephen Amell and original cast appearances, launched in February 2025 with creator Aaron Korsh at the helm before concluding its single season on May 11, 2025.
