M3GAN Re-Release: Experience 'Second Screen' and Live Chatbot
Top horror studio Blumhouse is set to celebrate its 15th anniversary in style, bringing the 2022 hit M3GAN back to theaters just ahead of the sequel's release. This limited theatrical engagement, however, comes with a twist that's sparking considerable debate: it encourages the use of smartphones in theaters.
As part of their Halfway to Halloween initiative, Shudder is set to screen M3GAN, along with Ma and Annabelle, in one-night-only events that incorporate Meta's innovative "Movie Mate" technology. This feature allows audience members to interact directly with M3GAN through a chatbot and access exclusive content in real-time via second screen capabilities.
"Movie Mate is exclusively available to moviegoers within a theater setting, and can be activated by sending a direct message to the Instagram account @M3GAN," Blumhouse explained in a statement covered by Variety. "This experience is designed to enhance the 'second screen' viewing, creating excitement ahead of M3GAN 2.0's release on June 27."
The studio also teased that fans can look forward to sneak peeks, exclusive messages from the films' directors and talent, and surprise special appearances in select markets. While this approach aims to generate buzz, it's seen by some as a potential blow to the traditional theatrical experience. Only time will reveal how fans react to this unique blend of technology and cinema. Personally, I hope this trend does not extend to regular screenings anytime soon.
The M3GAN screening is scheduled for various theaters across the nation on April 30, with Annabelle following on May 7 and Ma on May 14. M3GAN 2.0 is slated to hit U.S. theaters on June 27.
