The Future of GTA Online After GTA 6's Release: What We Know

The impending release of GTA 6 in Fall 2025 has left many GTA Online players wondering about the fate of their long-standing investment in the game. With GTA Online's continued profitability and popularity, the question of whether Rockstar will abandon the original in favor of a new iteration (potentially "GTA Online 2") is a major concern. Will players' time, effort, and money invested in the current GTA Online be rendered obsolete?

This question was posed to Take-Two Interactive CEO Strauss Zelnick, who offered insight by drawing a parallel to the company's handling of NBA 2K Online. NBA 2K Online, launched in 2012, was not shut down upon the release of NBA 2K Online 2 in 2017. Both versions continued to operate concurrently, ensuring continued support for existing players.

Zelnick stated, while avoiding specifics about GTA 6's online component, that Take-Two generally supports its properties as long as there's a dedicated player base. He highlighted the simultaneous operation of both NBA 2K Online titles as an example of this commitment. His statement, "we've shown a willingness to support legacy titles when a community wants to be engaged with them," suggests that the original GTA Online might not be abandoned if player engagement remains high.

However, much about GTA 6 remains unknown. Only a trailer and a release window have been revealed. With Borderlands 4's release slated for September 2025, Rockstar will likely need to provide more information about GTA 6 and its online component soon. The future of GTA Online hinges on the details yet to be announced by Rockstar.
