George R. R. Martin Reveals 'There Is Some Talk About Making a Movie Out of Elden Ring,' but There's One Big, Obvious Thing That Could Limit His Involvement With It – IGN Fan Fest 2025
George R.R. Martin hints at a potential Elden Ring movie, but his involvement remains uncertain due to his ongoing work on The Winds of Winter.
The author of the A Song of Ice and Fire series, whose world-building significantly shaped Elden Ring, recently addressed the possibility of a film adaptation during IGN Fan Fest 2025. While he avoided confirming an Elden Ring 2, he stated that discussions regarding an Elden Ring movie are underway. This isn't a new suggestion; FromSoftware's Hidetaka Miyazaki previously expressed openness to an adaptation, provided a strong collaborative partner was involved. Miyazaki highlighted FromSoftware's lack of experience in film production as a key reason for needing external expertise.
However, Martin acknowledged a significant constraint: his continued work on the long-awaited The Winds of Winter. He admitted that his current writing commitments might limit his participation in any Elden Ring movie project. The substantial delay of The Winds of Winter, over a decade in the making, has even led Martin to publicly contemplate its potential incompletion.
Martin detailed his contribution to Elden Ring, explaining his focus on establishing the game's rich backstory and lore, setting the stage for the present-day events players experience. He collaborated extensively with FromSoftware, providing concepts for the game's magic system and runes, and was consistently impressed by the team's creative interpretation of his contributions. He also indicated that much of his world-building material remains unused, suggesting potential for future expansions or adaptations. He drew a parallel to Tolkien's extensive world-building, noting that vast amounts of background material often remain untapped in large fantasy projects.
