Fortnite Makes Another Big Change to Master Chief Skin

Following significant player backlash, Fortnite has reinstated the unlockable Matte Black style for the Master Chief skin. Epic Games reversed its initial decision, confirming players can once again unlock this style.

The December Fortnite Winterfest event has generally been well-received, but the Master Chief skin's return proved controversial. Initially, Epic Games announced on December 23rd that the Matte Black style, previously advertised as always unlockable, would be removed. This sparked outrage, especially considering the skin's 2020 launch promise that players could unlock the style at any time after purchase by playing on Xbox Series X/S. The company quickly reversed course, re-affirming the original unlock conditions.

The Master Chief Skin's Controversial Return

The initial announcement drew strong criticism, with some players citing potential FTC violations. This comes on the heels of a recent $72 million refund issued by the FTC to Fortnite players due to Epic Games' use of "dark patterns." The dissatisfaction stemmed from the change affecting both new and existing Master Chief skin owners. Even those who purchased the skin in 2020 were initially prevented from unlocking the Matte Black style.

This isn't the only recent skin controversy. The return of the Renegade Raider skin also caused a stir, with some veteran players threatening to quit the game. Currently, some players are requesting an "OG" style for those who bought the Master Chief skin at launch, though Epic Games seems unlikely to implement this. While the Matte Black style issue has been resolved, the ongoing debate highlights the sensitivity surrounding skin availability and promises in Fortnite.
