Every run in Elden Ring begins with a starting class and there are 10 different options that are on the table. They all have slight differences in stats or equipment, and I’m going to rank them all from worst to best.

Screenshot by The Escapist. The two best starting classes are the Vagabond and the Wretch. However, there are compelling arguments for a couple of others to break into the top spots. Each class has its own advantages and they are all ranked below.

10. Bandit

The Bandit ranks at the bottom of the list, starting at a low level of 5 with a focus on Dexterity, which is considered weaker. Coupled with subpar equipment, the Bandit is the least favorable option for new players.

9. Confessor

The Confessor offers little in comparison to other classes. Faith is a challenging stat to build early on without specific items. The starting equipment also does not enhance early builds or Faith-based damage significantly.

8. Prisoner

The Prisoner, similar to the Bandit, is a weaker version of Dexterity and Intelligence builds. Starting off as quite fragile with less desirable weapons, players looking for these stats can find better alternatives.

7. Warrior

Among Dexterity options, the Warrior isn't the worst, starting with two swords and the highest base Dexterity. However, better Dexterity options exist, and the gear does not justify choosing this class over others.

6. Prophet

Faith-based classes are notoriously difficult to start with, but the Prophet stands out as the best of its kind. The spells are decent, yet the equipment falls short compared to other classes. Knowledge of where to find good Faith weapons can make the Prophet a viable choice.

5. Hero

The Hero class has significant advantages, starting with a Battle Axe and 16 Strength, ideal for early-game combat. The Ash of War enhances damage, though low Dexterity can be a hurdle for meeting minimum requirements. Still, a better Strength option exists.

4. Samurai

The Samurai is the top choice for a Dexterity-focused class in Elden Ring. It boasts excellent armor and starts with the Uchigatana, a weapon with great scaling, high damage, and the ability to cause bleeding.

3. Astrologer

For those interested in mage builds or using Intelligence, the Astrologer is the way to go. It can cast early-game spells efficiently with 16 Intelligence at level 6. The starting equipment is ideal, and it's perfect for those looking to transition into an Intelligence and Strength build.

2. Wretch

Starting at level one with 10 points in each stat, the Wretch offers flexibility with a decent club and a great Ash of War. The lack of armor makes it challenging for new players, but it's the best choice for those looking to fully customize their build or respec later.

The Vagabond is the top pick for both new and experienced players in Elden Ring. It offers the best stat distribution for early-game builds, a strong weapon, and armor that can last throughout the journey. Its versatility makes it easy to pivot into any build.

Does Your Starting Class Matter in Elden Ring?

In Elden Ring, unless you're aiming to min-max your build, your starting class has minimal long-term impact. Starting with a less optimal class like the Bandit might make the early game tougher, but you'll eventually tailor your stats and equipment to your desired build. Even in PvP, min-maxing provides only a slight edge that's noticeable only against top players.

So, if a class like the Bandit appeals to you aesthetically, feel free to choose it.

What Is the Easiest Class for Beginners?

For complete newcomers, the Vagabond is the recommended class. Its straightforward melee combat allows new players to quickly grasp Elden Ring's mechanics and find their footing.
