Denuvo's Product Manager Addresses Gamer Backlash Against Anti-Piracy Software

Denuvo's product manager, Andreas Ullmann, recently defended the company's anti-piracy software against persistent criticism from the gaming community. Ullmann characterized the community's response as "very toxic," attributing much of the negative feedback, particularly concerning performance issues, to misinformation and confirmation bias.

Denuvo DRM Criticism

Denuvo's anti-tamper DRM is widely used by major publishers to protect new game releases from piracy, with titles like Final Fantasy 16 being a recent example. However, gamers frequently claim that Denuvo negatively impacts game performance, often citing anecdotal evidence or unverified benchmarks. Ullmann countered these claims, stating that cracked game versions still contain Denuvo's code, and the additional code added by crackers often leads to worse performance than the original, uncracked version.

Denuvo DRM Performance

While acknowledging "valid cases" where Denuvo caused performance problems (like with Tekken 7), Ullmann pointed to the company's FAQ, which claims Denuvo has no perceptible performance impact. This contradicts his own admission of performance issues in specific titles.

Denuvo DRM Impact

Ullmann also addressed Denuvo's negative reputation and the short-lived attempt to engage with gamers through a Discord server. The server was quickly overwhelmed by negative feedback and memes, forcing Denuvo to shut down the main chat channel within 48 hours. Despite this setback, Ullmann remains committed to improving communication with the gaming community, planning to expand their outreach to platforms like Reddit and Steam forums.

Denuvo Discord Shutdown

Ullmann argues that Denuvo provides significant benefits to developers, citing studies showing a 20% revenue increase for games with effective DRM due to reduced early piracy. He contends that this ultimately benefits players through extended game support, additional content, and increased likelihood of sequels.

Denuvo Communication Efforts

The success of Denuvo's future transparency efforts in changing gamer perceptions remains to be seen. However, the company's attempt to control the narrative aims to facilitate a more constructive dialogue between gamers and developers.
