Should You Fight Lu Bu in Dynasty Warriors: Origins?

Let's be clear: defeating Lu Bu is a monumental task. In my playthrough, it took over an hour. However, there are compelling reasons to take on this challenge.

Firstly, the bragging rights. Overcoming Lu Bu is a significant accomplishment, a true badge of honor among players. Secondly, you might not have a choice. Siding with Shu or Wei in Chapter 4 necessitates facing Lu Bu during the Battle of Xiapi. Finally, victory at the Battle of Hulao Gate awards you the "Strongest" trophy. More importantly, post-game victory unlocks the game's ultimate weapon—the halberd—providing a significant incentive.

Lu Bu’s First Phase

Before engaging Lu Bu, strategic preparation is crucial. Equip a weapon capable of inflicting multiple hits and staggering him, ideally a sword. Battle Arts with low Bravery requirements, quick activation, and wide range are essential. My setup included Falcon Flurry, Mad Blade Rush, Absconding Slash, and Flying Dragon Slash. Accessories boosting health and defense, like Divine Bird’s Wing and Divine Turtle’s Shell, are vital due to Lu Bu's devastating attacks. Finally, prioritize a weapon skill granting Bravery for each Perfect Evade, as this becomes your primary Bravery source.

Initially, Lu Bu rides Red Hare. This phase involves dodging his charges. He's fast but pauses occasionally. Exploit these pauses to unleash your Battle Arts, then retreat. His attacks, except for Red Hare's powerful jump attack, have limited area of effect, making evasion relatively straightforward. Once his health drops to 80%, he dismounts, and the real battle begins.

Lu Bu’s Second Phase

On foot, Lu Bu's aggression intensifies. His attacks are rapid, and he moves swiftly across the battlefield. A red aura indicates an unstoppable combo. Evade his charges—he typically attacks in sets of three. A charge without his spear signals a grab attempt; evade this as well.

His most dangerous ability involves an orange glow, followed by three devastating ranged arrow volleys. Absconding Slash is invaluable here, allowing you to counter from a distance. Close-range Battle Arts are suicidal. Keep your Musou gauge full for emergency invincibility, crucial for recovering from missed dodges or combos.

Lu Bu is surprisingly susceptible to juggling during this phase. Sustained attacks rapidly charge your Battle Arts, breaking his Fortitude meter faster. Maintain close proximity for quicker reaction times. Remember: evasion is key.

Lu Bu’s Final Phase

Upon reaching a certain health threshold, Lu Bu enters Musou Rage, signifying the final phase. He becomes unstaggerable and unleashes relentless attacks. The goal is to deplete his Fortitude before he executes his Musou attack. Utilize all remaining resources: Musou attacks, Battle Arts, and rapid, powerful strikes. Failing to break his Fortitude before his Musou attack will force a phase restart. Success here culminates in victory over this formidable foe.
