Civilization VII (Civ VII) is making its VR debut this Spring 2025, exclusively on the Meta Quest 3 and 3S headsets. This marks the franchise's first foray into virtual and mixed reality gaming.
Meta Quest 3 Exclusivity
2K Games and Firaxis Games announced the VR version during the Civ World Summit on February 8, 2025. Dennis Shirk, Executive Franchise Producer, expressed excitement about bringing Civ VII to a new generation of players. Chris Pruett, Meta's Director of Games, highlighted the significance of this launch for the Meta Quest platform and its growing games portfolio. While Civ VII launches on various consoles, the VR experience will be exclusive to Meta Quest 3 and 3S.
Immersive Gameplay and Multiplayer Options
Civ VII VR immerses players in a detailed "Command Table" interface, allowing for strategic maneuvering and detailed unit and building observation, reminiscent of a physical board game. Players can seamlessly switch between virtual reality (VR) and mixed reality (MR) modes. The game offers single-player, co-op, and competitive multiplayer modes for up to four players using Meta Quest headsets. Online multiplayer requires both a 2K and Meta account.
Addressing Player Feedback
Firaxis Games is actively addressing player feedback from Civ VII's early access period (February 6, 2025, for Deluxe and Founder's Editions). The team is prioritizing UI improvements, enhancing map readability, and refining various aspects of the game's presentation. Future updates will also incorporate community-requested features, including team-based multiplayer and a wider range of map types. A quality-of-life update is planned for March 2025, focusing on UI adjustments, AI balance, diplomacy refinements, and bug fixes.

Civilization VII VR is slated for release in Spring 2025 on Meta Quest 3 and 3S, with a precise date yet to be announced. The standard version of Civilization VII is available via early access and launches worldwide on February 11, 2025, for PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, Switch, and PC.
