Captain America's New World Hits $300M Globally Despite 68% Domestic Decline
Captain America: Brave New World is inching closer to the $300 million mark at the global box office, yet its performance raises concerns about breaking even. The film, starring Anthony Mackie, had an impressive start with a $100 million domestic haul during the Presidents Day weekend. However, a steep 68% drop in domestic earnings during its second weekend, bringing in just $28.2 million, mirrors the disappointing trajectory of 2023's Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania, which also struggled to reach its financial goals.
According to Deadline, the movie's production budget was $180 million, setting a break-even point at approximately $425 million. After two weekends, Captain America: Brave New World has accumulated an estimated $289.4 million worldwide, with $141.2 million from domestic markets and $148.2 million from international audiences. The film added $63.5 million to its global tally over the second weekend.
Despite being the biggest cinematic release of 2025 so far, the film's significant second-weekend drop, even in the absence of competing blockbusters, has sparked discussions about audience enthusiasm. Paul Dergarabedian, a senior analyst at Comscore, noted to Variety, "This is the new normal for Marvel movies. There's still no denying these movies have appeal. But a second weekend drop of 68% reflects less audience enthusiasm than you'd expect from Marvel."
Deadline predicts that Captain America: Brave New World may conclude its theatrical run with around $450 million globally. The film launched to lukewarm reviews, with IGN's review awarding it a 5/10, stating, "Captain America: Brave New World feels neither brave, nor all that new, falling short of strong performances from Anthony Mackie, Harrison Ford, and Carl Lumbly."
Marvel Studios and Disney are now focused on whether Captain America: Brave New World can regain momentum and help reverse the recent downward trend for MCU films. The success of last year's Deadpool & Wolverine offers some hope as the studio prepares for upcoming releases like Thunderbolts* in May and The Fantastic Four: First Steps in July.
