Capcom Updates ‘Resident Evil 4′, ‘Resident Evil Village’, and ‘Resident Evil 7’ on iOS With Online DRM

TouchArcade Rating: Updates for premium mobile ports are usually welcome for optimization or compatibility. However, Capcom's recent update for Resident Evil 7 biohazard (Free), Resident Evil 4 Remake (Free), and Resident Evil Village (Free) on iOS and iPadOS introduces an unwelcome online DRM check. This verification of purchase history occurs upon game launch, requiring an internet connection to confirm ownership before accessing the title screen. Rejecting the check closes the application. While the check is relatively quick with an active internet connection, it renders these titles unplayable offline—a significant downgrade from their previous offline functionality.

Pre-update testing confirmed offline playability. Post-update, the DRM check, as shown above, prevents offline access. This forced online DRM is concerning, especially for games already purchased. Ideally, Capcom should implement a less intrusive purchase verification method, perhaps checking less frequently. This update negatively impacts the recommendation of these premium ports.

The games remain free to try. Download Resident Evil 7 biohazard on iOS, iPadOS, and macOS here. Resident Evil 4 Remake is available on the App Store here, and Resident Evil Village here.
