ASUS Teases Xbox-Handheld Device

Author : Christopher Update : May 14,2025

Gaming hardware giant ASUS has recently teased what could be an exciting new addition to the gaming world: an Xbox-branded handheld device. The ASUS Republic of Gamers (ROG) X/Twitter account shared a tantalizing teaser featuring a "little robot friend" cooking up something special, giving fans a sneak peek at both an ROG Xbox controller and the mysterious handheld system.

The buzz around this potential device started last month when IGN reported on Microsoft's ambitious plans for video game hardware. These plans reportedly include a full next-generation Xbox console slated for 2027 and an Xbox-branded gaming handheld that may hit the market later in 2025. The teaser from ASUS provides the first visual hint at what this handheld might look like, prominently showcasing buttons labeled with Xbox's signature layout (Y, B, A, and X) rather than the configurations seen on PlayStation or Nintendo systems. Additionally, the device features a D-pad, two thumbsticks, and four smaller buttons, though details on these are still somewhat obscured.

Adding fuel to the speculation, the official Xbox account responded to ASUS's teaser with a playful wide-eyed gif, hinting at a potential upcoming reveal. While no specific dates have been confirmed for the reveal or launch, the monitor in the teaser promises "Marathon stamina, more capacity, faster speeds" and a "fresh look," giving us a glimpse into what the handheld might offer.

In related news, Microsoft's VP of 'Next Generation,' Jason Ronald, mentioned to The Verge in January that the company aims to merge Xbox and Windows experiences for PC gaming handhelds developed by original equipment manufacturers (OEMs), including ASUS, Lenovo, and Razer. This move suggests a broader strategy to enhance gaming across different platforms.

While this particular Xbox-branded handheld won't be a Microsoft-made console, Microsoft is reportedly planning to launch its own console in 2027, alongside its next-generation Xbox. Xbox gaming boss Phil Spencer has indicated that a first-party Xbox handheld is still years away. The successor to the Xbox Series X, now allegedly in full production, is expected to be released in two years, aligning with Xbox president Sarah Bond's recent statement about moving "full speed ahead on our next generation hardware," promising a significant technological leap.

Amidst the excitement around new hardware, there's ongoing speculation about the future of gaming consoles. Netflix's President of Games, Alain Tascan, recently suggested that future generations might rely less on traditional gaming consoles. However, major players like Microsoft, Sony, and Nintendo continue to innovate, with Nintendo's highly anticipated Switch 2 set to be revealed in a Nintendo Direct on April 2. Fans are eager to learn more about the Switch 2's features, its release date, and pre-order details.
