39 More Classic Atari Games Are Making a Comeback
Atari's 50th Anniversary Celebration Expands with 39 More Classic Games
Atari, a pioneering force in the early home video game console market, continues to celebrate its legacy. Following the release of Atari 50: The Anniversary Celebration in 2022, a comprehensive collection of over 90 retro titles, Atari is releasing an Extended Edition on October 25th, 2024. This enhanced version will significantly expand the game library by adding 39 more classic Atari games.
The original Atari 50: The Anniversary Celebration featured a five-part interactive timeline documenting Atari's history, including design documents, manuals, and creator interviews. The Extended Edition builds upon this with two new timelines: "The Wider World of Atari" and "The First Console War."
"The Wider World of Atari" will showcase Atari's enduring influence through 19 playable games and eight video segments featuring new interviews, vintage advertisements, and historical artifacts, meticulously curated by Digital Eclipse. "The First Console War" will delve into the iconic rivalry between the Atari 2600 and Mattel's Intellivision in the early 1980s, utilizing 20 playable games and six video segments to tell the story.
While the specific titles included in the expansion remain undisclosed, Atari has confirmed a deep dive into the classic 1980 shooter Berzerk, alongside lesser-known late 80s games and fan favorites from Mattel's M Network division.
Physical releases for Nintendo Switch and PS5 are also planned. The Switch version will offer a Steelbook edition ($49.99) featuring bonus items such as Atari 2600 art cards, miniature arcade marquee signs, and a replica Al Alcorn business card. The standard edition will be priced at $39.99. The Extended Edition will be available across all major consoles and the Atari VCS.
