10 Nostalgic PS1 Masterpieces Now on Switch!
This concludes my retro game eShop series, primarily due to dwindling retro consoles with diverse game libraries. However, I saved the best for last: the PlayStation. Sony's debut console exceeded expectations, creating a legendary game library with titles still re-released today. While these games were initially a challenge for Nintendo, everyone now enjoys them across various platforms. Here are ten personal favorites (in no particular order):
Klonoa: The Door to Phantomile – Klonoa Phantasy Reverie Series ($39.99)
Klonoa, a deserving but often overlooked gem, stands out as a successful 2.5D platformer. Play as a charming, floppy-eared creature navigating a dream world to thwart a looming threat. Enjoy vibrant graphics, responsive gameplay, engaging bosses, and a surprisingly impactful storyline. While the PlayStation 2 sequel is slightly less impressive, both games are essential as a package.
Final Fantasy VII ($15.99)
A landmark title, Final Fantasy VII introduced the JRPG genre to a wider Western audience, becoming Square Enix's greatest success and a major driver of the PlayStation's dominance. While a remake exists, the original Final Fantasy VII offers a unique experience, even with its dated polygons. Its enduring appeal remains undeniable.
Metal Gear Solid – Master Collection Version ($19.99)
Another PlayStation heavyweight, Metal Gear Solid revitalized a dormant franchise. Although later entries became more eccentric, the original game stands as a thrilling action adventure, less philosophical and more reminiscent of G.I. Joe. Its engaging gameplay is a significant draw, and the PlayStation 2 sequels are also available on the Switch.
G-Darius HD ($29.99)
G-Darius successfully transitioned Taito's classic shoot 'em up series to 3D. While the polygons haven't aged flawlessly, their charm remains. The vibrant colors, satisfying enemy capture mechanic, and inventive boss designs create a compelling shooter experience.
Chrono Cross: The Radical Dreamers Edition ($19.99)
While I could easily fill this list with Square Enix games, I'll limit it to this and Final Fantasy VII to showcase other titles. Chrono Cross, though not quite reaching the heights of Chrono Trigger, stands as a unique and visually stunning RPG with a large, albeit unevenly developed, cast of characters. Its soundtrack is also legendary.
Mega Man X4 – Mega Man X Legacy Collection ($19.99)
While I enjoy most Mega Man games, my perspective is undeniably colored by nostalgia. For non-fans, I confidently recommend Mega Man X and Mega Man X4. X4 feels particularly well-polished compared to its predecessors. The Legacy Collection allows you to judge for yourself.
Tomba! Special Edition ($19.99)
Sony published several first-party titles it didn't own. Tomba! is a unique platformer blending adventure game elements with engaging action. Created by the mind behind Ghosts ‘n Goblins, it starts deceptively easy, growing progressively challenging.
Grandia – Grandia HD Collection ($39.99)
Originally a SEGA Saturn game, the PlayStation port served as the basis for the HD release. Sharing DNA with Lunar, Grandia offers a bright and cheerful adventure, contrasting with the prevalent Evangelion-influenced RPGs of its time. Its combat system is a standout feature.
Tomb Raider – Tomb Raider I-III Remastered Starring Lara Croft ($29.99)
Lara Croft's PlayStation debut is iconic. While the quality varied, the original Tomb Raider prioritized tomb raiding over action, showcasing Core Design's strengths. This collection lets you decide your favorite.
moon ($18.99)
This Japanese-only release deconstructs the traditional RPG, often described as an "anti-RPG." More of an adventure game, it's unique and sometimes challenging. Its unconventional approach and underlying message are compelling.
