They pulsed in rhythm with something older than memory, buried beneath the roots of the World Tree, which had fallen centuries past, its trunk split in half and buried beneath the ruins of the city of Vael’Thar. One ember was red—deep, seething, like the heart of a dying star. The other, pale blue, flickered with cold light, untouched by heat, yet no less dangerous. They were not meant to be seen. But she saw them. Kaelen of the Shattered Line stepped through the veil of dust and silence, her boots sinking slightly into the ash-laden soil.
