One ember was red—deep, seething, like the heart of a dying star. The other, pale blue, flickered with cold light, untouched by heat, yet no less dangerous. They were not meant to be seen. But she saw them. Kaelen of the Shattered Line stepped through the veil of dust and silence, her boots sinking slightly into the ash-laden soil. Her eyes—hazel, sharp with years of watching, waiting—locked onto the embers. She had spent her life chasing rumors, reading the tattered maps in her mother’s journal, tracing the lines of prophecy etched in blood on the inside of a dead man’s skull.
