Splitgate: 'Halo meets Portal' Sequel Revealed
1047 Games, the creators of the popular arena shooter Splitgate, has announced a sequel! Get ready for the Sol Splitgate League.
Splitgate 2: A 2025 Launch
Familiar Foundations, Fresh Experience
On July 18th, 1047 Games unveiled a cinematic trailer for Splitgate 2. This free-to-play sequel builds upon the success of the original, aiming for long-term engagement. CEO Ian Proulx stated their goal is to create a game that thrives for a decade or more. While inspired by classic arena shooters, the developers recognized the need for a deeper, more rewarding gameplay loop to ensure longevity in the modern gaming landscape.
Hilary Goldstein, Head of Marketing, emphasized a re-imagined portal system, aiming for a balance where skilled players can excel with advanced portal techniques, without requiring constant portal use for success.
While specific gameplay details remain under wraps, the game will utilize Unreal Engine 5 and introduce a faction system. Expect a fresh, updated feel despite retaining familiar elements. Splitgate 2 is slated for release in 2025 on PC, PS5, PS4, Xbox Series X|S, and Xbox One.
Known for its unique blend of Halo-style combat and Portal's portal mechanics, Splitgate's original version gained significant traction after a successful demo release, achieving 600,000 downloads in a single month. This popularity led to server upgrades to handle the massive player base.
Following an extended early access period, the original Splitgate officially launched on September 15, 2022. Development ceased to focus on creating the sequel, promising "revolutionary, not evolutionary" changes.
New Factions, Maps, and Characters
The trailer showcased the Sol Splitgate League and introduced three distinct factions, promising enhanced gameplay depth. According to the Steam page, these factions—Aeros (dashing mobility), Meridian (tactical time manipulation), and Sabrask (brute force)—offer unique playstyles. It's confirmed that Splitgate 2 won't be a hero shooter in the style of Overwatch or Valorant.
While detailed gameplay will be revealed at Gamescom 2024 (August 21-25), the trailer offers a glimpse into what to expect. The developers confirmed the trailer accurately reflects the game's visuals, including maps, weapons, portal effects, and the return of dual-wielding.
Exploring the Lore: Splitgate 2 Comics
Splitgate 2 will not feature a single-player campaign. However, a companion mobile app will allow players to delve into the game's lore through comics, collect character cards, and even take a quiz to determine their ideal faction.
