PGA Tour 2K25: The Final Preview
PGA Tour 2K25: A Solid Swing, But Not a Home Run
A hypothetical poll asking which pro sports game series 2K should tackle next would likely crown an NFL 2K revival as the clear winner. However, 2K is instead teeing off with PGA Tour 2K25, and after a few hours of gameplay, it's a promising offering.
HB Studios, the developer, has been refining its golf game for over a decade, starting with The Golf Club. This experience is evident in 2K25's polish. While not the most visually stunning sports game, and lacking an extensive roster of real-world courses (though it includes the PGA Championship, US Open, and The Open Championship), the gameplay is enjoyable. Minor issues, like occasional framerate hiccups on PC, didn't significantly detract from the experience.
The upgraded EvoSwing mechanic is a highlight. Using a controller, the right stick control (pull down to wind up, push forward to strike) felt intuitive. Difficulty levels range from forgiving (Perfect Swing) to challenging, where precise stick movements are crucial to avoid slices and hooks. The ability to laterally adjust tee shots adds a strategic layer. Playing as Tiger Woods, this year's cover athlete, enhanced the initial experience.
MyCareer mode incorporates engaging narrative elements, similar to other sports titles. A memorable moment involved a movie role alongside Christopher McDonald (though not as Shooter McGavin due to licensing). Choices impact stat boosts, and earned VC unlocks gear that further affects performance. The addition of weekly refreshed Quests (e.g., achieving 10 consecutive birdies) provides ongoing goals.
The MyPlayer creator, while not extensively explored, allowed for a reasonably accurate self-representation. Skill trees add welcome depth. Multiplayer options, including ranked matchmaking and cross-platform Societies, promise engaging social gameplay, reminiscent of classic titles like Links 2004. Asynchronous multiplayer caters to players with differing time zones.
PGA Tour 2K25 excels without being exceptional in any single area. While this might dampen initial excitement, it's shaping up to be a solid choice for golf enthusiasts and casual gamers alike. A playable demo is currently available.
