Concord, Sony's Major Flop, Continues to Get Updates on Steam
Despite its swift demise after launch, Concord, Sony's ill-fated hero shooter, continues to receive updates on Steam. This unexpected activity has sparked considerable speculation among gamers.
Concord's SteamDB Updates Fuel Speculation: Free-to-Play Resurgence?
Remember Concord? The hero shooter that flopped spectacularly? While officially offline since September 6th, its Steam page shows a steady stream of updates. Since September 29th, SteamDB lists over 20 updates, attributed to accounts like "pmtest," "sonyqae," and "sonyqae_shipping." These account names suggest the updates focus on backend improvements and quality assurance.
Concord's August launch, priced at $40, was a significant misstep in a market dominated by free-to-play giants like Overwatch, Valorant, and Apex Legends. Pulled from stores within two weeks, it garnered overwhelmingly negative reviews and a minuscule player base.
The continued updates, however, hint at a potential revival. Former Firewalk Studios Game Director, Ryan Ellis, alluded to exploring options for better player reach following the game's shutdown. Many believe a free-to-play model is in the works, addressing the pricing criticism that contributed to the game's failure.
With a reported $400 million investment, Sony's attempts to salvage Concord aren't surprising. Speculation abounds that Firewalk Studios is using this time to revamp the game, potentially adding features and addressing criticisms about underwhelming characters and gameplay.
While Sony remains silent, the possibility of Concord's return with improved mechanics, broader appeal, or a revised monetization strategy remains. However, even as a free-to-play title, it faces a tough uphill battle in a saturated market.
Currently, Concord is unavailable for purchase, and its future remains uncertain. Only time will reveal if these speculations hold true, and whether Concord can rise from its disastrous launch.
