Chris Evans Confirms No Return to MCU for Avengers
Chris Evans, known for his iconic role as Captain America in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), has firmly debunked rumors about his return to the franchise in "Avengers: Doomsday" or any other upcoming films. In a candid conversation with Esquire, Evans refuted a Deadline report that suggested he would be reprising his role alongside fellow original Avenger Robert Downey Jr., stating, "That's not true, though. This always happens. I mean, it happens every couple years, ever since Endgame. I've just stopped responding to it. Yeah, no. Happily retired."
The speculation about Evans' return was fueled by comments from Anthony Mackie, who assumed the Captain America mantle after Evans' character retired in "Avengers: Endgame." Mackie, in a discussion with Esquire, mentioned that although he had not seen a script for the upcoming film, his manager had informed him of Evans' potential return. However, Mackie later clarified that he had directly spoken to Evans, who confirmed he was not considering a comeback, stating, "I talked to Chris a few weeks ago and it wasn’t on the table then... He goes, 'Oh, you know, I’m happily retired'."
Despite his firm stance on not returning as Captain America, Evans did make a cameo in the MCU with a comedic role as Johnny Storm in "Deadpool & Wolverine," a departure from his central role in the MCU saga.
The MCU is currently navigating through significant changes, particularly after the departure of Jonathan Majors, who played Kang the Conqueror. Majors was set to become the franchise's next major antagonist following his conviction for assault and harassment. In response, Marvel has shifted gears, announcing that Robert Downey Jr. will portray Doctor Doom, a move that sparked further speculation about the return of other original Avengers. However, no official confirmations have been made regarding additional returns.
Amid these developments, Benedict Cumberbatch, who plays Doctor Strange, has confirmed that his character will not be part of "Avengers: Doomsday" but will have a "central role" in its sequel, "Avengers: Secret Wars." The Russo Brothers, former directors of the Avengers series, are set to helm this sequel, which will continue exploring the multiverse, with Hayley Atwell's Agent Carter also expected to appear.
