Brick-Breaker Evolution: Breakout Beyond Revolutionizes Gaming
Atari's classic 1976 game, Breakout, is getting a modern makeover with "Breakout Beyond." This reimagining of the iconic brick-breaker retains the core paddle-and-ball mechanics but introduces a unique sideways scrolling perspective.
Developed by Choice Provisions (creators of the BIT.TRIP series), Breakout Beyond features a left-to-right progression, challenging players to strategically break bricks. As combo chains build, visual effects intensify, creating a dynamic and visually stimulating experience. Special bricks trigger spectacular effects, from massive explosions to a powerful laser cannon.
The game boasts 72 planned levels and an unlockable endless mode with an online leaderboard for competitive play. For those who prefer cooperative gameplay, Breakout Beyond offers local two-player co-op.
Initially slated as an Intellivision Amico exclusive in 2020, Atari acquired the project and completed its development.
"We're excited to bring this title to our players," stated Atari's senior director of games publishing, Ethan Stearns. "The team saw the brilliance in preserving Breakout's core while completely reinventing its presentation. Breakout Beyond is a fantastic addition to the Breakout legacy, and we anticipate incredible player-created combos."
The Intellivision Amico, originally announced in 2018 with a planned 2020 release, remains unreleased due to various setbacks and delays. Atari acquired the Intellivision branding and intellectual property last year, but not the Amico console itself.
Breakout Beyond is set to launch later this year on PC, PlayStation 4 & 5, Xbox Series X & S, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch, and Atari VCS.
