BG3 Mod Boom: Patch 7 Unleashes Over a Million Mods
Baldur's Gate 3's Patch 7: A Million Mods and Counting
Larian Studios' Baldur's Gate 3 has seen a phenomenal response to its recently released Patch 7, primarily driven by the surge in community-created mods. The sheer volume is staggering.
Larian CEO Swen Vincke tweeted that over one million mods were installed within 24 hours of the patch's September 5th launch. This was further amplified by Scott Reismanis, founder of ModDB and mod.io, who reported that the install count has already surpassed three million and continues to climb rapidly. "Modding is pretty big," Vincke acknowledged.
Patch 7 itself introduced significant additions: new evil endings, enhanced split-screen functionality, and crucially, Larian's official Mod Manager. This integrated tool simplifies mod browsing, installation, and management directly within the game.
The existing modding tools, accessible via Steam, empower modders to craft their own narratives using Larian's Osiris scripting language. The toolkit allows custom script loading, basic debugging, and direct mod publishing.
Cross-Platform Modding on the Horizon
PC Gamer highlighted a community-developed "BG3 Toolkit Unlocked" (by modder Siegfre on Nexus) which unlocks a full level editor and reactivates previously restricted editor features. While Larian initially limited access to its development tools ("We're a game development company, not a tools company," Vincke stated previously), the community's ingenuity is evident.
Larian is actively pursuing cross-platform modding support, acknowledging the challenge of implementing it across PC and consoles. The PC version will lead the way, with console support following after thorough testing and submission processes.
Beyond modding, Patch 7 boasts numerous improvements: refined UI, new animations, expanded dialogue options, bug fixes, and performance enhancements. With further updates planned, the future looks bright for Baldur's Gate 3 and its thriving modding community.
